What the winery says about Mills Reef Elspeth 'One' 2005. . . .

The name 'Elspeth One' signifies the triumphant union of five classic varieties into one truly outstanding experience. It's single-vineyard (Mere Road) designation encapsulates the majestic essence of the Gimblett Gravels and innovative winemaking. Deep ruby red in colour, the nose is adorned with white pepper, spice, blackcurrant, liquorice, cedar and hints of mint, with appetizing aged characers of leather, cigar box, and fruit cake. The palate is weighty, rich, intense and velvety, giving it generous complexity with round luscious brambly fruit, black olives, plum, toffee and chocolate, on supple ripe tannins. The finish is equally intense and lingering. Very satisfying, it is drinking beautifully now but will also continue to reward with cepparing. this is an opulent wine - a meal in itself!

Awards and Accolades . . . .

An intriguing blend of syrah with equal portions of malbec, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc from a single vineyard in Gimblett Gravels. The wine was given a cold maceration for eight days prior to ferment and a further 15 days afterwards. It was then aged for 18 months in French barriques. An interesting mix of sweet fruit and savoury characters. Quite complex with red berry, bacon fat, anise, new leather, mixed spice and nutty oak flavours. The wine is accessible but has the potential to age well. Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine Oct/Nov 2011
